The PS3 is about to be kicked off the hill, and it deserves it!!!

The PS3 is about to be kicked off the hill, and it deserves it!!!
Why is the Xbox 360 a better supported machine with more proven hardware?

By: Bryan Randal

Sony has always been good at putting out raw process numbers, but good benchmarks won’t always yield you better games. You have to be able to put that rubber to the street, or in this case the game to the GPU. If you don’t have the software to get you there it could be a very long process with a new and unfamiliar technology. This is my major observation while looking at the PS3, although it is putting out some great numbers I believe you will see some very long development times. What does this mean? Well it means that by the time the PS3 launches next spring it will have a pitiful 30-40 launch titles. What? Only 30-40 titles, if this has been in development for so long why so little mojo, who stole the PS3’s mojo??? The 360 will be rolling into Halo 3 (the PS3 killeryea I said it), there will be an estimated 80-100 Xbox 360 games on the shelves and in the hands of gamers. Developers will be taking advantage of the XDK program released monthly as well as Visual Studio’s provided by Microsoft. These tools will allow for more game development and a better understanding of how to take full advantage of the GPU, CPU’s and all the 360 has to offer.

In the argument over optical storage: Blue-Ray is a Sony developed technology and now they are trying to push it on all consumers. If anyone is jumping the gun here it is Sony for using a technology in its machines that hasn’t even been adopted by all movie houses or developers. It is not a superior drive and in fact Iomega announced just this week that it was granted 2 optical storage patents which can turn out DVD’s with a capacity of 850 GB!!! The DVD-ROM shipping with the 360 will carry you into 2007 with no problems. If a new format has been globally adopted whether it be Blue-Ray or HD-DVD in the next year why can’t we add that to our Xbox just like you Sony boys added your hard drive. Oh well we can…this argument holds no ground.

The 360 optical storage will support: DVD-Video, DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-DA, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, WMA CD, MP3 CD, JPEG Photo CD while the PS3 will only support: CR-ROM, CDR+W, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R….so sad.

The GPU in the Xbox is in fact not something you will find on the market right now. Just to clarify…it is not a traditional pipeline GPU design; it is extremely multi-threaded and has an auto balance for vertex shaders and pixel shaders. Microsoft and ATI worked to develop this custom chip so that it wasn’t like anything on the market today.

Sony has a spotted past with its HORRIFIC customer service as well as terrible audio devices, Laptops, DVD player and speakers. I will give credit where it is due and say that they do put out a good TV. Sony isn’t the electronics company that everyone wants to be and Microsoft is the devil trying to overthrow the world...I have heard it all. With companies and products this large there are going to be problems. I personally have never had any issues with Microsoft products; on the other hand I have taken a sledge to a faulty Sony DVD player and PS2. If you don’t like the Xbox because you don’t like Microsoft just say it. It will save us all a lot of time.

Halo and Halo, where do I begin. These games are not Unreal, Quake or Doom, they are much much better. I really don’t know why I have to defend these games because I think that if you really sit down and play them through you will finally get it. You haven’t even played Halo2 and only one or two games of the original. If you are going to dog a game at least have the decency to play it. Enough said.

I am an Xbox fan because of the great games and Microsoft’s strong commitment to Xbox live. The PS just doesn’t have the exclusive game content it used to. It has no killer app and is trying to rely on relic games such as Metal Gear and Grand Tourismo. The problem is that there are games doing it better, Forza for the box is getting higher praise than Tourismo and Splinter Cell destroys Metal Gear. So why buy the PS3, they have no first person shooter that comes close to Halo and nothing on the horizon. Sony’s PS2 just never embraced the online experience and now they are trying to play catch up…and they realize that they are losing. The PS3 console is a huge hail mary and I hope it lands 10 yards short if it doesn’t good for everyone.

The Xbox 360 will prove to be the system of the future. It will push the limits of gaming, home entertainment and the online world of Live!! So when the 360 hits the shelves the November I will be there, when the PS3 comes I will be there buying Halo 3 and when the Nintendo Revolution finally peeks it’s head out I will relive my childhood.

There are no plans that I have seen that state the Xbox 360 will have an upgradeabe optical drive.

Also the Xbox 360 is missing some HD formats. Sony supports all 5 of the major standards (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p), X360 will only support 720p and 1080i. So far I don't see any plans to make that an upgradable item on the X360. In addition to fully supporting those 5 standards the PS3 will ship with 2 video outputs.

You stated that PS3 will only support these Discs: CR-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R.

You left out a few standards.
CD-DA (ROM), CD-R, SACD Hybrid (CD layer), SACD HD, DualDisc (audio side), DualDisc (DVD side), DVD-RW, DVD+RW, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE. You add them up thats more the Xbox 360.

The Iomega disk format is AT LEAST 4-5 years off. You don't just pop a product out overnight (unless you are Microsoft).

Sony is going to be using development systems that most developers are extremely aware of. Please check the posts on this site for any reference's to PS3 developement kits.

Please check your facts before you post.

I nearly forgot, if Metal Gear was such a tired franchise, why did Microsoft seek to get it on it's platform?

One more thing. Didn't most people buy the Xbox because of it's hardware superiority? In leiu of good game library?

Actually the xbox supports all but 1080i chech your facts before you post. How hard is it to upgrade the optical?? Plug and play with the USB..come on.

The Iomega drives are actually 1-2 years off. Not that bad. So why switch then switch back.

Metal Gear Sucks!!!

Iomega drives are at least 2-4 years off, check the article.
