Exclusive Interview with Pete Hines of Bethesda Softworks (Oblivion)

The Console Wars' Exclusive Interview:
Pete Hines of Bethesda Softworks (Oblivion)

The Console Wars: "Hi Pete, I really want to thank you for taking some time today to answer some questions for us here at The Console Wars. We are all excited about Oblivion and as MD natives we are huge supporters of your work. There is allot of buzz on Bethesda's upcoming next generation games, these questions are actually compiled from the most important people to you guys…the consumers.

Please start off by telling us a little about yourself and your position at Bethesda. How did you get into the business? What is the best part of your job? Anything else you would like to add? "

Pete Hines: "I’m the vice president of public relations and marketing. I have a bachelor’s and a masters in business, worked for a number of years for different associations doing pr and marketing while I also held down a side job covering video game for The Adrenaline Vault. This job was the perfect opportunity to bring together two things I was really good at (pr/marketing and video games).

I handle the day-to-day pr for the game, like this interview, as well as things like packaging, ads…pretty much anything you see or hear about the game. I also spend some time doing other things like writing the manual, editing the strategy guide, posting on the forums, playing the game, answering emails from fans… a little bit of everything. I enjoy getting to work with the dev team on different projects, or trying the latest game, or just hanging out at lunch playing board games or whatever. It’s the best bunch of people I’ve ever worked with.

The best part of my job is definitely landing a big cover story or article about the game and the team. I feel obligated to make sure the kind of coverage the team gets is a reflection of the time and effort they put into making such a great game and it’s rewarding to see them get excited about things like that."

TCW: "Is there any new word on whether or not user made mods for Oblivion will be available for download via xbox live? At the time of your Gamespy interview it sounded like a "No".

Pete Hines: "Right now we know for sure that we plan to offer downloadable content for Oblivion. Beyond that nothing has been determined yet. We still have some ideas of things we’d like to do and are talking to Microsoft about if and how we might be able to do them. We work hard at managing expectations and part of that is trying not to promise anything we can’t be sure we’ll deliver."

TCW: "Do you have any PS3 development kits and what did you think of them compared to the XBOX360 kits? What are the key differences? Do you have a favorite?

Pete Hines: "Right now we’re focused on PC and Xbox 360 for this holiday season. We aren’t talking about or announcing any other platforms for the foreseeable future."

TCW: "Are you going to keep making open ended RPG's or are you getting into some other genres? If so which ones and do you have any details?"

Pete Hines: "In addition to Oblivion we’re in the very early stages of development on Fallout 3, a post-apocalyptic role-playing game. But it will be a long, long time until we’re ready to talk about what we’re up to on Fallout 3. The teams here in Rockville will definitely continue to focus on The Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises.

As far as other games/genres, as a publisher we also look to partner with external developers that are making the kind of games we get excited about. We have a number of those in the works and will be talking about them as we go along.

TCW: "In Oblivion is there a slider to adjust how freely the Radiant AI is allowed to work? We read something about it being complete chaos if they allowed all NPC's free reign on their actions. That would be fun, maybe after beating the game, to see NPC's setting each other on fire and whatnot."

Pete Hines: "What you’re talking about is not really something that can be controlled with a slider (Sane -> Crazy). Rather, it’s about the way we build the system the controls the AI and fine tune it to the point where we iron out all the kinks. We do that by playing the game, watching how NPCs act, and tweaking things accordingly. For example, if the problem is that the NPCs are buying every item in town until there’s nothing left to buy, then we have to look at their buying behavior, how much gold they have, how much items costs, etc., until we fix the problem."

TCW: "Are there any mini-games in Oblivion? If so how many and can you give a few examples?

Pete Hines: "The two mini-games are the persuasion mini-game and the lockpicking mini-game. They were good opportunities to do something a little fun, a little different, without fundamentally altering the balance of the game or the impact your character, and his/her stats, have on the game. The lockpicking one is kinduv addicting."

TCW: "Do you plan on translating the more than 50 hours of spoken dialog and many books worth of game content for the over sea's launch? And if so how soon after a US launch do you expect to launch in other countries?"

Pete Hines: "We do have plans to fully localize the game in a couple of countries. Definitely Germany and France. The amount of dialog and text we have means that we can’t just do it for every and any country we want. You need a volume of sales to justify doing it, otherwise you can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to sell a few extra copies. Not smart."

TCW: "Any news on Fallout 3?"

Pete Hines: "As I’ve said before, we believe in taking the requisite amount of time to do a game right. Oblivion is a good example of that – it’s already three years in the making and wasn’t even announced until it was more than two years in development.

All we really announced last year was that we had acquired the rights to develop and publish Fallout 3. So, for us, it’s still very early in the process and we don’t like to talk about our projects or show anything on them until we are much further along the road to completion and actually have things to show.

We believe that great games are played, not designed, and until you take all those ideas and implement them and see if they work, you really don’t know what you have, so why bother talking about them? For example, we designed three complete combat systems for Oblivion before we finally found the one we liked, so as a result it would have been really pointless to talk about the first two at the time, when it turns out they ended up getting completely redone."

TCW: "Will we see the creeper or the mudcrab from Morrowind make cameos in Oblivion?"

Pete Hines: "Wouldn’t want to spoil any surprises by revealing them at this stage, but in a game as big as Oblivion you’re always bound to see something you never expected."

TCW: "With the environments be fully destructible with dynamic weather and time? (sunset, sunrise, snow accumulation, rain accumulation, real lava flow, land shifting, stuff like that)"

Pete Hines: "We have dynamic weather and time so that you’ll have all kinds of weather (snow, rain, fog, sunshine, overcast, etc.) and you’ll see the sun and moons rise and set. We don’t do terrain destruction or deformation."

TCW: "Are there any plans add expansion packs via Live like the Tribunal and stuff in Morrowind?"

Pete Hines: "We have some early plans but at this point we’re more focused on getting Oblivion done then worrying about what we’re going to do once it is done."

TCW: "What about the horses? Will they be able to level up and such just like your character? Please elaborate on the features or these beasts."

Pete Hines: "No, they don’t level up. They are a mode of transportation and, in truth, a bit of a status symbol for the player. They aren’t cheap. You’ll find different towns will have different types available and you can have several of them stabled in towns as you travel around. They’re like any other creature, so if you’re riding one and get attacked and you jump off to fight, your horse can be attacked, fight back, run away, be killed, etc."

TCW: "Will the 360 version of Oblivion be equal or superior to the PC version?"

Pete Hines: "That’s a tough question because “PC” can mean an almost infinite number of things. What video card? Sound card? How much RAM? Are the right drivers installed? The list goes on and on. All these things determine performance on a PC. The advantage of the Xbox 360 is that it’s designed to run our game, period. You know if you have a 360 it will look as good as it can possibly look. If you have the latest, greatest PC with the best video card, etc., it will probably look the same as the Xbox 360 version. Anything else will probably lag behind.

When people ask us whether or not to do a major PC upgrade or get the console version of one of our games, we always recommend the console version. Our games tend to push the limits of technology pretty hard, so it’s much easier to predict performance on a closed box than one with thousands of possible configurations."

Thanks again Pete, your fans will greatly appreciate this. If possible can you please include a picture of yourself? And if you have any screenshots, drawings, movies, anything at all that could be considered new information everyone would appreciate it. Let me know if we can do anything for Bethesda in the future.

Pete Hines rocks! and the interviewer rocks!! this is one of the most informative new interviews yet!

woohoo! Pete sure is handsome! =^^=

Anonymous Anonymous
no, it's not the most informative, not at all.

Blogger Blunt
haha...it's not that great but I enjoyed the read. It's kind of nice that a huge company like Bethesda will answer questions from a simple weblog like ours.

Anonymous Anonymous
Lots of good (and new) information. This was a useful interview!

Anonymous Anonymous
hey.. i was wondering if.. now that horses can be killed and stuff...
i was wondering if they could have an armor... you said it... they arent cheap, they cant level up and they can be attacked..
a horse in a daedric armor would be practical, aside from the orgasmical look of a daedric armored horse and knight...
<3
i loved the interview

Umm, where he said "Will the 360 version of Oblivion be equal or superior to the PC version", I think he means will xbox be half as good or just crap compared to PC.

Anonymous Anonymous
half as good or crap? moron.

because im sure youve had the chance to compare x360 games to thier PC versions?

that or your seriously too stupid to understand the hardware thats in the 360.

you r teh winnar@!

Anonymous Anonymous
Just because you have a giant stick up your ass doesn't mean you're better than us you elitist shit.

Console will run as well as it can with its' hardware, which will probably be fairly near the way it's "supposed" to be played.

I'll give up some performance for user interface though... Screw controllers.

i feel bad for my beloved fallout franchise.

Anonymous Anonymous
I duno, Fallout s a great franchise. Brotherhood of Steel really sucked though..
When will game manufacturers understand that if you take game A to make Sequel B you need to leave the thing in the same genre or don't call it a sequel? Don't re-make the same game exactly but make sure it retains its feel. Fallout 2 was an awesome example of improving a game in a sequel. It was much longer, more varied, and had significantly (but not amazingly) better graphics. It still, however retained the exact same "feel" and gameplay style that was the reason I loved it. There was really nothing else out there like it.
Then somebody came up with Brotherhood of Steel: take a turn-based RPG game with a really quirky, sly sense of humor and turned it into a semi-realtime strategy game with minimal RPG elements and no personality. They turned Fallout into Starcraft and expected fans to love it like the origional.

I think the comment about the 360 version being half as good as the PC one is just based on...ahem... the fact that games released on consoles have always been better on PC's, not just for control, but clearer, crisper graphics, and overall a better gaming experience, imo things arent going to change.

Anonymous Anonymous
Imo when XBOX arrives, it will be as good as a good/very good PC that one will be able to buy at that time. If someone pays a small fortune for his PC or buys a new PC 6 months later, one will probably be able to run the game much better than the console

It's nice to know that mounts will react and be treated as real animals. Other than that tidbit, the rest of the interview was an enjoyable read, but didn't really offer an new information. However, I think at this point in time, we are not going to get any other significant information on the game until Bethesda elects to release it on their website or in a major publication. They have done an excellent job of keeping us informed while not boasting about features that haven't been thoroughly tested and already implemented.

As far as the comments on Console vs PC...

"I think the comment about the 360 version being half as good as the PC one is just based on...ahem... the fact that games released on consoles have always been better on PC's, not just for control, but clearer, crisper graphics, and overall a better gaming experience, imo things arent going to change."

The reason why a PC with equal hardware capabilities will appear clearer and crisper is because of the resolution on the screen. That said, I would still sacrifice the performance of an xbox360 to my inferior PC because of the interface.

Not a bad interview at all, as for specs...if your building a BRAND NEW pc yea itll cost more but if your a regular pc'er then all you gotta do is upgrade a little, xbox360 is set in stone yes, but im at the point where i could either buy a x360(w/HD)or upgrade my pc for around the same price PLUS space out little upgrades here and there to make it run even better whereas the xbox is pretty much stuck

Anonymous Anonymous
Its the Xbox half as good PC or whatever poster guy here. I say that because I get annoyed when everyone thinks 360 will be so awsome and cool. Controllers suck. Bigtime. 360 will be very good when it comes out being able to run things and all. PC's are already capable of being better. MUCH better in a couple months after Xbox 360 comes out.

Anonymous Anonymous
I just can´t understand why no bloody console manufacturer in the whole wide world ever makes a console with a mouse and a keybord-like-thing!??!? The only reason I dont buy a console is because I hate playing with joypads, it really really really really really and really sucks.. bigtime. A mouse and a num-pad-like controller for x-box would make me buy it instantly

Anonymous Anonymous
With a bit of knowledge and a soldering iron, you can look under the hood of an XBox and ... turn it into a PC. Only problem with this is (a) it is illegal (b) heartstopping if you turn the XBox back on and nothing happens. I guess there is a small chance the same could happen for the 360.

The only question is why would you go to this trouble when you can get an upgradeable PC? Beats me!

Anonymous Jack
What some of you people don't get is that, even though you can upgrade your computer to run Oblivion as well as the XBOX 360, you can't make it run/look better.
I would much rather get a 360, then have to spend time searching around for parts.

The 360 is going to run games at top-notch quality, there's no reason to worry about it getting infected, and the controller is much easier to use.

Anonymous Anonymous
umm hello you would have to have the latest pc with the latest video card to look like the xbox 360 version.and keyboards are not as comfortable as a controller.and the xbox 360 version will look better and be better anyway. its just common sense to get the 360 version.

Blogger Blunt
I won't argue with that!!! 360 all the way people.

the only reason you PC freaks are giving shit to console games is more than likely because your friends destroy you at Halo. It's okay, I'm sure you kick there ass at counterstrike when you can convince them to play that horrible game. It's all about what you are used to. Personaly the only keyboard/mouse games i was ever good at were blizzard made ones (starcraft/warcraft/diablo) because they basicaly require no skill. Slap a controler in my hand and i might as well be issuing mental commands to the game. Anybody here beat Ninja Gaiden on Hard with Master Ninja on every level? Anyway s its all about what you grew up with in my opinion

not to mention that oblivion is being built with the 360 in mind. and you can download stuff

Blogger D.Vader
When it comes to FPS, I definitly prefer the KB & Mouse. Consider this with a controller you are only using 6 fingers maximum, with KB & Mouse you are using all 5 fingers on 1 hand (with access to many more buttons) and your other hand takes care of all the looking.

It will be interesting when they finally have Multiplayer games cross platform and vs. PC players. Then we will see if you controller guys get eaten up! :)

Three words: 'TES Construction Set' :D
PC version for me deffinatly :P
Don't really care if my PC's spec. can't make it look like a 360.
The great thing about GOOD RPGs like Oblivion, which looks to be VERY good indeed, is that the Eye-Candy is just an added bonus and you'll get solid enjoyment from the game even without the latest & greatest hardware.
Besides, performance wise my PC will get there eventually :P

Anonymous Sirwootalot
I personally love both versions equally - I grew up with consoles (PCs were just too expensive for a kid like me in 1998), and playe dmorrowind on xbox first, but am also an obsessive modder. I am getting both versions; though i'm getting the PC version just about entirely for the construction set, as I'm gonna need 500 dollars or so to upgrade my PC.

Anonymous Anonymous
He didn't answer the "open ending or not" question. He also didn't speak of the differences in substance between PC and X-BOX, he marginalised the differences to graphics. Usually there's more to it than that.

Anonymous febrithwaren
you loyalist fools the 360 is not better than the pc. first off most tvs cannot support the resolution like a monitor can and as for searching for parts. biggest load of sh** i have ever heard try Newegg.com. as for the controllers being better than keyboards it is first mostly an argument on opinion and preferance. also tecnically the keyboard allows more options while the controler is more of a feels good in my hands thing. so i will say this only once never compare the Xbox or the Xbox 2 to the PC for it is a PC and will ALWAYS be pwned by other PCs of the same time period because that is how it works so screw all you loser psyco bi***s that are console loyalists.

And as a Finallity Bethesda Rules Whoot.

Blogger D.Vader
I think you missed the entire point of the remark man.

He said it would be quite expensive for a PC to look better then the Xbox 360.

For the average gamer that doesn't have $2000 to spend on a powerhouse PC, this is great news!

Anonymous Anonymous
1st off all you get super performance for 500$. The Xbox360 can be plugged into an LCD and supports HDTV - thats for the resolution you guys are so keen of. Whats regarding the contoller some games are better played with a gamepad but the Xbox360 can surely handle a Keyboard and mouse. Even the good old PS2 has some games which have support for K&Mouse. end of story

Anonymous Anonymous
MMMM....3 x 3.2 gig processors, LCD or HDTV res, massive bus width (an absolute must have for this generation of games), and the fact that "Beth" them selves said this X-beast is built to run it at max, thumbs up quality. They havn't even tapped into building games for this awsome technology/hard ware yet.
You would need an entire farm of cows to beef your Pc up to the glory that is the Xbox360.eat it!

Blogger D.Vader
It sounds impressive indeed!

Anonymous Anonymous
You guys are fucking retards, the xbox 360 is going to have an amazing graphics card that will exceed capabilities of those until next year... FUCKING IDIOTS, xbox 360 is going to own.

Anonymous Anonymous
For a year or two at least. Plus like the one guy said you can use a keyboard and a mouse on the consoles if you have a cheap adaptor.

Anonymous Anonymous
Ideots!...Im sorry, hard not to say.. His exact words were that even if you have the best newest computer you won't see much of a differance between the xbox and PC version. BLAh!

Anonymous Anonymous
"If you have the latest, greatest PC with the best video card, etc., it will probably look the same as the Xbox 360 version." YOU IDEOTS! Im sorry, I had to say that..But do any of you actually read? That WAS a direct quote from the inteview..I don't understand how people get 'xbox will be half as good as pc' from that comment? MY GOD

Anonymous Anonymous
look at you guys argueing like children. im going to say this from a third person point of view someone who always upgrades his comp and has xbox 360. here it goes. xbox 360 is very good and runs on a good graphics card ext. which is great in all but new graphic cards are always being released for the pc such as the new nvidia geforce 7800 gtx 512 mb with sli tech. now this is the first video card to run 512 mb and this card came out after the release of the xbox 360 and thus cannot be licenced by the microsoft to be placed into later versions of the xbox 360.l also this interview takes place before the release of the 512 mb video card tech so for you guys who quoted the comment pete hines made you cant do that anymore. and im going to say this again from a third person point of view the pc graphicly is capible of being alot better. now for preformance the xbox 360 mis running duel processors which i must say is shibbyyyyyyy that that comes right out of the box when you buy it and without getting an extention for thje pc which costs about $90 the xbox 360 is gonna run better but it is possible to get that upgrade and the performance wise there pretty much the same that is of coarse unless a person who has a pc is gonna run faster procesors such as 3.6ghz then it goes to the pc but to be fair that costs alllllllloooooot of money which i recently had to dish out and then go home crying lol. so that one goes either way but again to be fair ill give it to xb360 ok, ok. now moving on. this is a touchy subject the controler vs. the keyboard and mouse, now for all your information pc can adapt to use the xbox 360s controler and a havent heard about the xbox360 running a keyboard but its a possiblity so thats all up to a matter of preferance, ill leave it at that. now on to screen resolution both can be adapted to work on an hd monotor so thier both the same but and average tv does not have near the same resolution as a pc screen. but this round still goes to no one. now i want to comment on your comments. now for the person who made that xbox half as crap comment screw you the xbox 360 is an great system. now for the person who said that the consoles have always had better graphics than pcs what the hell is wrong with you jesus that just sounds like a smeer campain to me because the pc has been known throughout the past to have better graphics than consoles. now for the person whos said that beth. was focusing on the console you are so wrong in so many ways the market for this game is 30 percent larger on the pc and in other interviews they have said that they are focusing on the pc market. ok again moving on. i just want to state something that alot of people dont seam to understand theres a differance between a person who owns a pc and a pc gamer. a person who owns a pc might play counter strike every once and a while and proclain himself a hardcore gamer. a pc gamer spends all his time upgrading his pc with the latest hardware and software. and they will most likely always be ahead of the consoles (please for those who play console dont take that personaly im one of you also). now the console system is a wonder in itself mostly because it is so dam easy you go out you buy it and you got the lates and greatist thing, but there are two distinct disadvantages one is that mods cannot be reliesed for the consoles they simply are reliesed to rapidly and even with downloadible content could not become a factor in console gaming (at least for now). now stick with me my console frieds overall if you ar a pc gamer then in most aspexcts money aside the pc is better. but the console will assure that you run into little or no problems which trust me leaves the pc gamer saying "luckkkyy", which is something you should certainly be proud of but that doesnt mean you should "EVER" say that console is better than pc that is just ignerent, but trust me i will say this as someone who plays the console and pc the console people have it made when it comes to simplicity and decent every thing. but the pc gamer is someone who has alot of time and money to invest thus naturaly things are going to be better (there is a reason that the xbox costs $400 and a new video card costs from $500-$700). and for the people who want to alter the game themselves (a luxerie that console gamers do not have "yet") if they have training in that type of thing you need to go pc. were as people who try to upgrade there xbox 360's if there are any people like that out there are either going to be fined or going to "kill" thier xbox360. all in all the "game" the elder scrolls oblivian will be the same on both pc and xb360. meaning the story charicters missions and overall fun factor will be the same. oh and id also like to say it doesnt matter how the game is built if your buy a new graphics card even 5 years after the games reliese its going to look better. so we all need to just stop argueing and and unite under one flag "MICROSOFT" and go out there and defeat sre enemies such as Sony, NIntendo, and the unholy Bi**h and scorge of the whole gamming comunity the evil apple.

ps. i am personly getting it for both just to compare the two anyways please take into consideration everything i said and note that i have little to no bias on this situation.
