Mass Effect Preview (Xbox 360)

"Edmonton-based developer, BioWare Corp., hardly needs an introduction amongst Xbox gamers, or PC gamers for that matter. With renowned series like Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Jade Empire in their stable of successful games, BioWare is considered the crème de la crème of RPG developers.

After their enormous success with KotOR and Jade and the news that BioWare had licensed the Unreal Engine 3 tech, we knew that an Xbox 360-related announcement wasn’t too far off. While many were expecting something along the lines of a Jade Empire sequel, instead we were introduced to an all new intellectual property currently in development; the upcoming sci-fi epic, Mass Effect. While not being shown in playable form at X05, we did get the rundown on the grand scope of the game thanks to producer, Casey Hudson, and BioWare’s Greg Zeschuk.

Set in the 23rd century, the action/RPG/adventure begins as humans are on the cusp of new advancements in space exploration. These new findings allow them to reach the outer realms of the universe, and in doing so, we realize that intelligent life and well established civilizations are prevalent in a number of galaxies beyond our own. The twist to the game comes in form of what exactly those civilizations consist of; it becomes a conflict of nature vs. technology. Entire races of artificial intelligence become the biggest threat to organic life and you will ultimately shape the destiny of the universe across the epic trilogy, with Mass Effect being the first.
