PS3: Most expensive games console ever?

"Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Ken Kutaragi hints at PS3’s potentially sky-high price tag.

If we’re to believe Sony’s well-oiled hype machine, PlayStation 3 will drop an almighty silicon-packed turd on Xbox 360. Sure, hardware stats mean jack without cold hard proof of how the software performs, but that’s still some way off. Nonetheless, here at T3 we’re still utterly fired up and convinced that PS3 boasts the potential of becoming the ultimate games platform. But here’s the pinch… Sony Computer Entertainment’s CEO Ken Kutaragi has suggested that the price of this scorching piece of kit could be super steep.

Speaking to Japanese economic website Toyo Keizai, he stated that Sony’s aim for PS3 is “for consumers to think to themselves 'I will work more hours to buy one'. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else." Surely a pretty fat hint that PS3 could launch with an unprecedented price. Hardly surprising, considering that PS3’s custom-made nVidia graphics chip codenamed RSX is said to be as powerful as two of nVidia’s top PC graphics cards currently worth around £400 a pop.

So it’s educated guesstimate time. Or better still, time to whip out T3’s trusty crystal ball. We’re seeing a four… a five… and a zero. £450 it is then. Sporting speculation aside, watch this space for the most up-to-date PS3-related news and goss."

This is absurd. Do we all forget the Neo Geo? If memory serves me well, I believe the Neo Geo debuted for $399. I remember some of the games cost in the $80 range. That was 1990 when $400 was really a chunk of change.

PS3 at $450...ouch!!!

PS3 MSRP has not been released. Speculations put it around $399. Which will be a steal considering the graphics card that will use simular technology for the PC will run over $400.
