Amazon.com [& ToysRUs.com] cancels all Xbox 360 pre-orders

Amazon.com cancels all Xbox 360 pre-orders

"E-tailer Amazon.com has cancelled all Xbox 360 pre-orders after selling the system through retailer Toys R Us early Thursday morning.

In a letter from Amazon.com and Toyrus.com to pre-order customers, the two retailers wrote:

Due to a system error, we mistakenly listed the Xbox 360 Video Game System you recently ordered as "available" on our web site.

We're sorry, but this item is not currently available. Therefore, we have cancelled your order and your credit card has not been charged."

This is the second time in recent months that Amazon.com has canceled pre-orders for video game products. The e-tailer previously offered pre-orders for the Nintendo DS game Nintendogs through retailer Target and subsequently cancelled all pre-orders due to a pricing error.

In March 2005, Amazon.com canceled pre-orders for the $249 PSP Value Pack after a similar availability error. The retailer then released PSP bundle configurations that sold for $300-$400.

Consumers have been irked by recent bundle configurations for the Xbox 360, with online retailers like Gamestop.com and EBgames.com selling system bundles from $600 to $2000.

Brick and mortar retailers like Best Buy, Circuit City, and Toys R Us typically do not sell video game systems in bundles.

Microsoft will release the hotly anticipated Xbox 360 Core System and premium edition sometime in November."
