PlayStation 3 Graphics RSX

"The PS3 graphics will run on the Nvidia G71 graphics processor which have available speeds of 650MHz to 700MHz.

Nvidia labels the chip as a 90 nanometre graphic core for the PlayStation 3. The RSX graphic chip is set to work at 550MHz, and Nvidia can guarantee that a million chips will work at this processing level.

Nvidia can already make the G70 work at speeds of 550Mhz, but they are unable to ship millions of them to meet the PS3 demands.

When it comes to
the PlayStation RSX, there is every reason to believe that the chip is already exhausted, as Nvidia plans to have G71 in the first quarter of 2006. We can expect to see some of these cards before the CeBIT in March 2006.

PlayStation 3 RSX graphics performance can process 24 pixels with its 24 pipelines of data, while the Microsoft Xbox 360 can do no more than double 48 pixels per clockspeed. ATI powered the Xbox 360 with the "Xenos", the R500 chip.

Nvidia G71 graphic chip is capable of doing speeds of 650Mhz to 700Mhz.

Sony and Nvidia can also position the GeForce 7800 GTX with 512MB to be the performance estimates of RSX chips, but we doubt that RSX will have memory working at an insane 1700MHz plus.

Remember RSX is here to stay for at least five more years and it has to go down to 65 nanometre and 45 in next few years to make it cheaper to produce." [more]
