PlayStation 3 Technology

PlayStation 3 Technology

"There are approximately 120 PS3 games in production for the upcoming Sony PlayStation 3.

There's been a lot of talk recently in the GameSHOUT Forums and Message Boards regarding which game console will dominate within the next 12-18 months.

Right now, most people believe it will be the Microsoft Xbox 360, but I am sure the near launch date has some influence on that. To some degree. Other people believe that it will be the Nintendo Revolution, promising to revolutionize the entire game console market. Then we have the Sony PlayStation 3. A remarkable entertainment system that has by far, the best hardware specifications announced.

However, there is little more to know about the PS3. We know of some specifications, but not all. There have been reports that it will be based on open source APIs for game development.

Most video game developers have already announced games for the PlayStation 3. Some of them include Killzone 3, Devil May Cry 4, Shin Megami Tensei, Armored Core 4 and Unreal Tournament 2007.

PlayStation 3 is also hinting at Linux. Some reports say that the PS3 hard disk drives will come preinstalled with a GNU/Linux
operating system. IBM sent out a series of improvements and patches to the Linux developers mailing-list regarding the Sony Cell processor, and has publicly presented a server running Linux Kernel 2.6.12.

PS3 will have Backwards compatibility, allowing it to be compatible "on the chip" with most PlayStation 2 and PlayStation games without any emulation. Backwards compatibility is supposed to be achieved through a combination of hardware and software.

According to PSM Magazine, the Sony PlayStation 3 will not be backwards compatible with some of the hardware peripherals of the PlayStation 2. Which means that memory cards for PS and PS3 will not work on PS3 hardware.

As for which console is the best, only time will tell. We know the Xbox 360 is launching with free balloons and hotdogs. The PS3 isn't even out yet, and from what we are hearing, it may be delayed until mid 2007. The Nintendo Revolution has decided to keep their specifications under wraps, for now.
