If you've read the Ars review of the Xbox 360, you know I really like the hardware, and there are some great gems in the software lineup, especially on LIVE Arcade. So why is the launch of the hardware one of the most glaring lowlights of this year?

I can't think of a single retailer that handled it well. The scenarios are familar: prerecorded calls saying your preorder will no longer get you a system at launch, big-box stores that didn't know how to handle crowds or long lines, even outright violence... unless you were one of the lucky ones who got on the first shipment at a chain video game store, you didn't have a good time buying your system."
