PlayStation 3 processor to support Mac OS X Tiger

PlayStation 3 processor to support Mac OS X Tiger

"The processor in Sony's PlayStation 3 gaming console will support Apple's Mac OS X Tiger operating system according to a recent posting to Sony's UK website.

The highly anticipated successor to the PlayStation 2 is expected to hit the streets in 2006, shortly after Microsoft releases its rival XBox 360 system.

"Sony is expected to offer optional hard drives for the PlayStation 3 with potential memory capacity of 80 or 120 GB. It remains to be decided whether the standard version of the PS3 will come complete with a hard drive," reads a company statement.

"The operating system has also yet to be clarified. The integrated Cell processor will be able to support a variety of operating systems (such as Linux or Apple's Tiger)."

It's unclear at the moment exactly what this will mean for Mac or PlayStation 3 users. Sony's Cell processor is a derivative of IBM's PowerPC chip used by Apple in its personal computers.

Previous mumblings had presented the possibility that Apple was looking to form a partnership with Sony on the PlayStation 3 that would make some of the console's games compatible with the Mac OS X operating system. With Apple's announced switch to Intel processors, this now seems less likely.

Analysts at Wedbush Morgan Securities recently said that Sony may delay the release of the PlayStation 3 until 2007 if the Microsoft's Xbox 360 launch is less than stellar."

Im sorry to say d.vader but heres a article that crushes dreams.http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/gameroom/2005/08/ps3/index.php
but sony had approached mac before about there processeors and was rejected.Knowing apple i fully doubt their operating system will be on anything else that a apple product.

Dirk, Tiger is based on FreeBSD Linux. Linux has been proven to work on any processor. It's purely business, why wouldn't Apple want to support the PS3? They have no love for MS. This article merely points out the possibilities.

Apple allowed HP to HP brand the Ipod. The article is speculation, but it does remain a possibility. Just because Apple didn't embrace the CELL doesn't mean they won't make an OS work for it.

Dont get me wrong vader, I would love to see tiger on the ps3 i have been a mac fan all my life its all i have ever used my laptops, my computers have always been mac, i have tryed pc but its not as reliable. It would be great but apple is very tuff and they dont play around when it comes to there software or hardware. I like the fact that you do research and know your stuff its good to be able to talk back and forth.

by the way nobody mentioned microsoft,on top of the fact we are buying vidoe game systems not pcs or macs.

If you use all the same Software that you use on Mac for PC, it can be just as reliable. I built my own system and never saw a blue screen of death. The only problem I encountered was a Keyboard issue :).

I think Sony is just getting it out there that their CPU will be open. There won't be as much of a need for hackers to do things to the system because the functionality will be there, hopefully from day 1.

The fact of the matter is the next gen systems will be powerful enough to run as PC's. Sony is embracing this fact.

Not specifically you can run a system but you will be limited to what you can actually do and a dideo game system is exactly for video games nothing else i know what there trying to do but its a lil over the top and thats why there system will be costly.

A little over the top. You Xbox boys are funny. Everyone talks about how bad ass the Xbox is next to PS2. I grant you the Xbox is technically superior to PS2. But now with this generation of games you are all like, the PS3 is just too much.

Are you a MHz hungry performance gamer or not?

Thats not what i meant by it i mean trying to turn it into a PC i dont want a PC i want a super gaming machine that will blow my socks off.. thats what im looking for as for a os yes it should have one but for our basic gamer needs...
