Itagaki Wants HD-DVD in Xbox 360
"With a laugh, he states that he wishes the system would have used the HD-DVD format, but he realizes that this would be difficult due to time issues. Still, given some of the merits of using pre-rendered movies, he expresses disappointment that developers may be limited in mixing movies with gameplay.
Itagaki has more positive comments regarding Xbox Live. He expects more users to log on to play Dead or Alive 4 than did Dead or Alive Ultimate. Because just about everyone will be able to connect to Xbox Live, it will be easy to make Online components a central part of the game. The Xbox Live features of Dead or Alive 4 will be advanced well beyond Ultimate, he promises, enough to even make you wonder if you're playing a fighting game."

Gates Is Confused About Licensing Xbox 360 OS
"It seems that Bill Gates is making once again statements that take his employees by surprise. After he declared yesterday that he is considering licensing the software which Xbox 360 operates on, Microsoft officials have issued a statement whose purpose is to clear
things up.
Microsoft officials announced today they are not planning to license Xbox 360’s software.
From the statements made yesterday by Bill Gates, one might draw the conclusion that producers will be able to manufacture Xbox clones which will be operated by the system devised by Microsoft for its own gaming console.
Today’s statement sets things right and says that Microsoft is considering allowing other companies to produce Xbox, but that is just an idea and there is no real decision in that direction.
Microsoft is determined to be the only company that produces Xbox 360, whether hardware or software."
Grand Theft Auto GTA Screenshot for PS3?

"Mystery screenshot purportedly of next Grand Theft Auto hits the web A screenshot supposedly revealing the first glimpse of Rockstar's next-gen version of the biggest gaming franchise in the world, Grand Theft Auto, has been exposed.
The shot, pictured right, depicts a typical GTA-esque landscape featuring a large apartment building in the background, pedestrians to shoot at and, of course, cars to steal.
Scant details accompanied the picture when it was first posted on French website Jeux-France late yesterday, but they did reveal some interesting and unusual suggestions.
As well as predicting a first showing on PlayStation 3, the website suggested that the game would soon come to other next-gen consoles due to "online possibilities".
What this actually means is anyone's guess, but we like to think that the next GTA will have some kind of MMORPG-type element to it.
Jeux-France also claimed that the game will be six times larger than San Andreas, with 350 different cars, and would see players having to administrate fuel levels in the cars they drive.
Most odd though was a suggestion that, when literally translated, said the game would introduce a "system of creation of animals". No, we don't have any idea either... perhaps you breed dogs?
Naturally, when asked, Rockstar declined to confirm or deny the image's authenticity, unsurprisingly choosing to play the 'no comment' card.
UPDATE
Following yesterday's swift 'no comment' response from Rockstar regarding the supposedly leaked next-gen GTA screenshot, the company has contacted us this morning to flatly deny the picture is of any GTA game currently in development.
While Rockstar has no idea where Jeux-France, the original source of the image, got the shot from, the company has gone on record to deny that the picture came from any of its internal development studios.
So that's that then... or is it? We're still none the wiser regarding what this image is actually of and where it came from. The question is, will we ever find out? We'll keep you posted as soon as we uncover anything further on this intriguing tale... "
From what the update says, it sounds as though this isn't a GTA screen. On a side note I wish people in this industry would learn their terminology. I can gaurantee you 100% the next gen installment of GTA will not be a Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game.
No Xbox Controller Support For Xbox 360

One of the big unanswered questions about Xbox 360 regards Microsoft's plans for current generation peripherals. While one look at the Xbox 360's beautiful dedicated controller (known in some circles as Type Sex) will make you swear off the Type S forever, it's conceivable that gamers have built up a collection of Xbox controllers that they'd like to continue using on the next generation system. So will Microsoft provide the chance?
The answer seems to be no, at least currently. Interviewed in the latest issue of Famitsu Xbox, Microsoft Product Development Limited Xbox Chief Shinichi Manaka reveals that Microsoft won't offer a USB converter to let players use their current controllers on the 360. Microsoft isn't even looking into the possibility. The company wants to offer a fully wireless environment and believes that once players get used to wireless, they won't want to go back.
We presume 3rd party peripheral developers will come to the rescue here.
Manaka is also asked for details on the wireless technology that powers the 360. While the PS3 uses generic Bluetooth technology, Microsoft has only stated that it's using its own wireless technology for 360. Many insiders believe that, at the hardware level at least, the system uses Bluetooth, with some Microsoft layers operating on that. Manaka seems to deny this, stating that Microsoft developed the technology almost from scratch. The company did at one point consider using outside technology, but decided to go with its own method when issues of time lag and battery power came under consideration."
This isn't a huge surprise. I will be surprised if PS3 will support older controllers. I didn't see any ports for older controllers.
Xbox 360 Licensing Rumors Quashed
"Lost in translation, not only a rather good movie starring Bill Murray but Microsoft's phrase of the day today, following yesterday's rather confused comments on a licensing deal for the 360's operating system, which emerged during Bill Gates' current tour of Japan.
The story? Well yesterday Japanese newspapers were reporting that Microsoft's grand fromage had said that the company was open to the idea of licensing the Xbox 360's operating system, much in the same way as it does with Windows PCs. Subsequently Microsoft Japan spokesman Kazushi Okabe told a salivating press that the idea was only at the preliminary stage and no final decision had been made.
Well today having considered its options, Microsoft has dumped on the idea from an almighty height, after rumors ran riot that Microsoft was considering letting third-party manufacturers make their own consoles using the 360's operating system. We're not quite sure how the story got so far, but it pinged around the 'net like a greased eel, with every re-telling gathering momentum.
However Microsoft now says: "There's certainly a potential for other hardware companies to manufacture Xbox some day in the future, but that is not something we're focused on right now. Xbox will continue to be manufactured exclusively by Microsoft."
So that's that cleared that up then. More 360 OS madness as it happens."
More Xbox 360 Beta Kits Roll Out
"Reports suggest Microsoft has unleashed fresh dev kits - developers in for long weekend...
Microsoft has completed its biggest roll out yet of Xbox 360 beta kits to third-party developers according to Stateside reports, meaning that work on 360 games can now progress at top speed.
You may remember that we reported the first beta kits had been shipped at the beginning of last month, but this new despatch of kits means that most developers working on Xbox 360 titles will now be able to harness the full power of the console.
The original alpha development kits, which Microsoft used to show Xbox 360 games on the showfloor at E3, were said to only contain 30% of the power of the finished console. These beta kits should contain the finalised 360 chipsets making them the closest thing yet to how the console will be off the shelf.
Early reports suggest that the additional power of the beta kit is allowing developers to create visuals that live up to the console's early promise. Some commentators at E3 felt the games shown were lacking in graphical oomph, especially after Sony's jaw-dropping 'demonstration' of the PS3's power.
So spare a thought for your favourite developer this weekend - they may finally have their hands on an Xbox 360 dev kit, but now they have to figure out how to get the most out of it in advance of the console's worldwide launch in November."

Java to be Used in Blu-ray DVD Players
"Next generation Blu-ray DVD players will ship with built-in support for Sun Microsystem's Java, which will be used for interactivity features. The announcement was made at Sun's JavaOne conference in San Francisco on Tuesday and could prove a big win for the technology that has largely remained Web-based.
All interactive features including menus, network services and games will be Java-based, according to Yasushi Nishimura, director of Panasonic's Research and Development Company of America.
"The Blu-ray Disc Association, the standards body for the format, has decided it will adopt Java for the interactivity standards," said Nishimura. "This means that all Blu-ray Disc player devices will be shipped equipped with Java."
Although Java was initially designed with consumer electronics in mind, Sun's technology has found little success in the mainstream market compared to its adoption in the enterprise. In order to spur further Java use, Sun has developed three new licenses to provide developers with access to Java source.
Java in Blu-ray means next-generation DVD players could have advanced network capabilities, such as the ability to download added content from the Internet.
But despite backing from Blu-ray, Java's adoption in the living room is far from shored up. A competing high-definition DVD standard, known as HD-DVD and backed by Toshiba, will reach the market before Sony-developed Blu-ray."
XBox 360 vs. PlayStation 3: First Blood is Current Gen
"The first battle in the war involving the new PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Revolution consoles hasn't even been waged yet, but it seems that the first casualties are beginning to appear.
And we're not talking now about the customers' wallets (although they'll most likely be the next to suffer), but about the models already existing on the market. Everyone is arguing about SP3 or Xbox 360, but lately we haven’t heard anything about SP2 or the original Xbox.
The most important issue in this case is that of new games, because the developers are already preparing some new titles specially designed for the new consoles. Thus, in an interview for Wired magazine, the creator of the famous Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto, has said that there will be no new Mario titles for the GameCube, but only for the future Revolution console. And it looks like Metal Gear Solid 4 will suffer a similar fate, because, according to an interview published in the Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, it will be compatible only with PlayStation 3.
It’s very clear that all the funding is now channeled towards developing titles for the future consoles. It's actually a very normal strategy. However, the ones who'll suffer the consequences are none other than the gamers, because they'll have to cough up at least 300 US dollars (the estimated price of a Xbox 360, and it looks like PlayStation 3 will be even more expensive than that) in order to be able to enjoy the latest and most interesting games."
When I first heard the Xbox 360 will be out in November I was quite surprised. For one thing the games on the current generation are starting to look very good. The PS2 development package can now put out some robust titles. Xbox probably won't see another generation of development improvements. Microsoft is hungry for marketshare so they have stepped the time table up by about 4-6 months. The sad fact is that even with their early release analysist have already weighed in and predicted Sony to maintain the lead (albeit smaller) in the console wars.
For some reason the author of this article calls the PS2 the SP2. :P
Xbox 360 to be Open Source?
"The latest rumor comes directly from Billy Boy’s lips as he tours Japan. Mr. Gates has implied that Microsoft is considering an open source option for its next-gen console. The specifics are unclear, however. MS could be trying to counter Sony’s decision to promote open source development for the Cell; or it could mean that MS is interested in encouraging 3rd-parties to develop a slew of peripherals for the 360. We’ll keep you posted."
Konami To Support Revolution
According to Japan's weekly Toyo Keizai, Konami plans to support all three next-generation home consoles, including Nintendo Revolution, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3.
Toyo Keizai, Kazuya Takahashi (President, Online Company) and Michihiro Ishizuka (President, Computer & Video Games Company) told Toyo Keizai that it plans to release one or two flagship titles for each system. Each game will take advantage of whatever console it is released on.
Konami has already revealed one of the PS3’s flagship games, Metal Gear Solid 4. It plans on creating new properties for the Xbox 360, and it did not talk specifically about Revolution.
The company also went on the record saying multiplatform games were not out of the question, and that it’s good to allow as many players to experience its videogames as possible. "
Developer Trashes PS3 and Xbox 360 Processors
"If you’re ready to get down, dirty, nitty, and gritty on the latest (and apparently not so greatest) generation of processors used in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, peep Anand’s analysis of some very insider information on the forthcoming systems by an unnamed game developer who’s worked on both boxes. If you’re comfortable making heads or tails of things like processor architecture, branch prediction, pipelining, etc., feel free to knock yourself out with the read, but straight up word on the street is that the Xbox CPU is only about twice as powerful as the 733MHz Pentium III used in the first Xbox in real world gaming situations, and supposedly Sony’s Cell isn’t all that much better. Of course, there are just so many factors in game system bottlenecks—and we’re not the kind of site to get gory on it here—but the bottom line is if you were super enthused about these two new powerhouse systems, prepare to get some of that piss and vinegar knocked out right quick."
This all got started on AnandTech website. Some insider expressed many griefs about the new platforms and their enigmatic development process. The original article was pulled Anand got a bit scared that MS might find out who his insider is. Below is nearly a retort, but the author does explain that he is never comfortable with passing judgement on unreleased hardware. That being said he does shed some much needed light on the Multi-Threaded debate.

Microsoft Might License Xbox Software
"Forget the video game console — your TV could already have the brains to play those games. A coy Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates hinted Thursday that his company might license the software underlying its Xbox gaming machine to a variety of outside companies in a bid to expand the market share for the Xbox machine — a platform that trails the sector's No. 1 Sony PlayStation.
The U.S. software company is considering offering "the basic software" for Xbox, although no decision has been made, Microsoft Japan spokesman Kazushi Okabe said Thursday, confirming the Gates' comments reported in Thursday's editions of Japan's top business daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun.
Gates hasn't offered specifics about the kind of software or which companies would be involved. He also hasn't said whether the arrangement will involve manufacturers making products other than game machines, such as digital consumer electronics gadgets that combine PC functions with home appliances.
The arrangements being considered are similar to those that Microsoft has employed in the past by working with other companies, including Japanese electronics makers, to install its Windows operating system in personal computers, Okabe said.
It's unclear whether such gadgets will carry the Xbox brand name or some other name, and whether the software that may become available to outsiders will be Xbox or Xbox 360."
Next Gen Strategies from 5 Japanese Publishers
Next Gen Strategies from 5 Japanese Publishers
By: Richard Allen Seems to be some doom and gloom out there about the next gen system developement costs and number of games. I for one don't think less games will be a bad thing. Hopefully this will help to stem the tide of clone games that end up in the bargain bin a few months after release. Since the gaming industy is moving from a virtual cottage industry into something that resembles the movie industry, developers are already hard at work consolidating their forces and making long term plans. If things go just as they have in the movie industry you can expect the developer market to shrink in terms of how many companies are actually developing games. Gamespot interviewed 5 japanese publishers in reference to the next gen consoles. They each give some insight on what is happening and what is bound to happen to the video game industry.

New Xbox 360 Screens for Project Gotham Racing 3
"Bizarre Creations, the developer of Microsoft's Project Gotham Racing games for Xbox, has released two new screens this week that the company insists are in-game screens for Project Gotham Racing 3. As you likely already know, PGR3 is slated for an Xbox 360 release sometime during the "launch window" (between November 2005 and March 2006, basically).
The quality of these two new screens is staggering, but their level of detail has also raised questions about their true in-game, non-rendered nature. The PGR3 screenshots previously released (see them here) didn't have nearly the level of detail of these newest shots.
Considering Microsoft is continuing to finalize and distribute final development kits for its Xbox 360, it's entirely possible that the screens below are, indeed, actual shots, and that the previously released shots were simply less-detailed due to their pre-alpha development status.
You can click on either of the images below to see it in a higher resolution, then judge for yourself whether these could really be the unaltered face of next-generation racing games."
These are very impressive, but is it pre-rendered?
UPGRADED HD XBOX 360 PLANNED TO COUNTER PS3 THREAT
"Possible HD DVD-enhanced model a possibility, says Gates, as new DVD format war looms.
Microsoft plans ahead, to a time when traditional DVD isn't big enough to contain movies and video games, mooting a possible upgrade to the not-even-out-yet Xbox 360.
An awkwardly hot potato for Microsoft, this. Just ahead of the ridiculously important launch of Xbox 360, Bill Gates himself has been forced into hinting that an upgraded Xbox 360 may be needed to cope with the new disc formats on the horizon.
"The initial shipments of Xbox 360 will be based on today's DVD format," says the world's richest geek, before adding "we are looking at whether future versions of Xbox 360 will incorporate an additional capability of an HD DVD player or something else."
With the high-capacity HD DVD format set to go head-to-head with Sony's Blu Ray discs for dominace of the home cinema market over the next few years, having a console that can play movies - as Sony proved with PS2 - is going to be crucial in cracking the mass market Microsoft so desperately wants. You can see from this morning's news how Microsoft are getting into bed with Toshiba to make this happen."
I called this one over a month ago! Bill should have really kept a lid on this one though.
Konami president reveals Xbox 360 exclusive title
Konami president Michihiro Ishizuka has revealed that the publisher is currently working on an all-new title for Xbox 360, hinting that it will be exclusive to the platform.
In an interview with Japanese magazine Toyo Keizai partially translated by Gamespot, Ishizuka says: ''[We will] provide one or two flagship titles for each machine, which will take advantage of their capabilities as next-generation consoles.
'We will release a new Metal Gear as a flagship title for the PS3, and are developing an original product for the Xbox 360.'
He goes on to suggest that we can expect see a smaller range of Konami titles on the shelves in the future.
'Most of the titles that don't require full use of technology will be released on multi-platforms, including PC. We will need to narrow down the number of titles that we release.'"

Xbox 360 NBA Live 06 Trailer
It is a good day in sports gaming when the character models are so detailed that you can actually see sweat coursing down players' bodies. That's exactly what happens in the trailer for the Xbox 360 version of NBA Live 06, and we have the video to prove it.
We've already seen some pretty amazing stuff from the EA crew for Madden 06 on the 360, but the Live trailer takes things to the next level. Featuring video of the Sonics and Pistons, the segment kicks off with theatrical music and the unmistakable voice of Marv Albert setting the scene. After whisking around the arena, the camera closes in on the action, and we get our first glimpse of the character models: roped with muscle, perfectly structured, and closely resembling their NBA counterparts.
With the NBA Finals so fresh in everyone's minds, it's easy to see just how good the likenesses are. Not only are the face models for Tayshaun Prince and Chauncey Billups spot-on, but their body types and accessories are also perfectly matched. This is nothing new for a Live game, but it's never been this detailed. "
The New Wave: Xbox 360
When Microsoft entered the console wars in 2001 many were skeptical about how the Xbox would fare. The PS2 had been released a year earlier to a reception that bordered on mania. People were buying PS2s on eBay for $1000 and for many the PS2 truly ushered in the DVD era. Nintendo's popularity was waning, leaving a chance for the Xbox to squeeze its way onto the scene, but could Microsoft hack it with a new system roughly the size of a minivan and no prior experience in the console market? The answer to that question is complicated. While the PS2 was definitely the winner in the current console bout, the Xbox secured a solid second place and gathered many fans with its impressive graphical capabilities and robust online support. For the next console generation Microsoft hopes to secure a place in gamers' living rooms ahead of its competitors by releasing their system first. Will Microsoft's earnestness pay off or will the Xbox 360, overshadowed by the impending PS3 release, go the way of the Dreamcast?"
PlayStation 3 Aiming for Xbox 360 Compatibility?
"SPOnG had a meeting with a high-ranking executive from a platform holder last week. We had beers in the sun. It was all very pleasant. During our chat about the ins and outs of the games industry, we were told something that sounded too incredible even for our news pages.
“I saw a Sony PlayStation 3 presentation slide last week,” he said. “Guess what was on it.” We guessed a picture of our staff looking dubious. It wasn’t that. We guessed a PlayStation 3. We were told, “Of course a PlayStation 3 but what else…?” We gave up. With a crafty wink we were told, “A PlayStation 3 linking out to all sorts of things, being compatible with them all in some way. Guess what one of the things was.” We said we didn’t like guessing anymore and just wanted to know. “An Xbox 360! In some way, Sony is planning on making the PlayStation 3 ‘talk’ to the 360, though exactly what they are planning wasn’t explained.”
Our source was 100% explicit about what he saw and was 100% confident in his conviction. “The slide was shown to many delegates at the ELSPA summit. It was on screen behind the stage for a long time. I can’t believe no one noticed the Xbox 360 in the corner.”
Neither could we. It just seemed too far-fetched."
PS3 to sell for $399, cost $494
"Merrill Lynch Japan predicts Sony will lose more than $1 billion on hardware during its next-gen console's first year on the market--a sum it may not be able to recoup.
According to the latest issue of Japanese magazine Toyo Keizai, Merrill Lynch Japan Securities has recently calculated an analysis that the production of a single PlayStation 3 console will cost Sony approximately 54,000 yen to make ($494), as of its initial release in 2006.
Given that Sony's PS3 will face stiff competition from Microsoft's Xbox 360, the chances that Sony will release its console at its production cost is slim. Under the assumption that the Xbox 360 is expected to sell at around $299, Merrill Lynch Japan predicts that Sony will sell each PS3 at the price of 44,800 yen ($410) in Japan and $399 in America. That would mean Sony would suffer a loss of more than 130 billion yen ($1.18 billion) during the first year of the PS3's release."
This is a comman practice for big corporations. It's a tactic called loss-leader. Microsoft did it with the first Xbox, with an even higher loss margin by some estimates as high as $150 each unit. I wasn't a big fan of this tactic that Microsoft used, but now in order to stay competitive Sony will have to follow suit. The estimate of 1 billion dollar loss sounds a tad high, especially when you consider that the hardware pricing will come down over time. My first impressions of the hardware is that it's totally worth the $500 and a steal at $400.Related Links:

Softimage To Support Xbox 360
"Softimage, Co., a subsidiary of Avid Technology, Inc., today announced support for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system with the release of the .FX plug-in - a free effects creation tool for SOFTIMAGE XSI software, the 3-D animation element of Avid’s integrated computer graphics solutions for game development. With this new plug-in for XSI, game developers now have the industry’s most advanced 3-D tool combined with the latest in effects technology to create high-definition characters, props and elements for their Xbox 360 titles. The technology powering the Xbox 360 allows developers to build graphically intense high-definition environments with all titles being designed for HD television resolutions (720p and 1080i) in 16:9 widescreen.
Adds Gareth Morgan, senior product manager for Softimage, “By using XSI with the new.FX plug-in, our customers can immediately begin creating art that’s ideally suited to the Xbox 360. XSI delivers a unique combination of the industry’s most advanced 3-D character animation system, integrated support for the latest realtime effects and the extreme scalability that teams need to meet next generation production requirements.”
The .FX plug-in for XSI, which includes support for sophisticated DirectX real-time shaders, allows developers to use third party shader-development tools, to apply those effects to XSI models, and to take full advantage of XSI’s normal mapping and animation tools. Imported effects can be refined and animated with real-time visual feedback. In addition to producing high-definition graphics, next-gen titles will also require larger teams working in a collaborative environment. Earlier this year, Softimage announced support for Microsoft’s XNA software architecture, designed to enable enhanced collaboration between content creators, programmers, management and quality-assurance staff to speed the game production process.
A rapidly growing number of game companies are adopting Softimage’s advanced technology to meet the demand for greater sophistication in game content. XSI features advanced tools specifically for developers, including easy-to-use normal and effect map generation, interactive real-time shader viewing, the fastest subdivision surface modeler in the industry and a scalable, flexible architecture designed to accommodate large production pipelines."

Sony CEO talks about Playstation 3 CELL technology
"Sony's new CEO Howard Stringer explained that Sony will cut back on some of its research and development programs in an effort to put more focus on products that the company believes will allow it dominate once again. He emphasized two items that will likely be central to Sony's business for many years to come: the Cell processor, which will be used not only to power the PlayStation 3 but also many of Sony's electronics, and the much ballyhooed Blu-ray disc, which will be the standard hi-def format for the PS3 and the format that Sony hopes eventually replaces DVD in the marketplace.
'PlayStation is the largest chip eater. Leveraging game applications, we've got the most advanced [Cell] technology, which will give us high competitiveness. The next step is determining what applications we can develop on the Cell processor, for which we are launching a project,' said Sony president Ryoji Chubachi"

Xbox 360 Might Have HD DVD Drive (Not at Launch)
"Today, at a joint news conference in Tokyo, Microsoft and Toshiba announced they will strengthen their joint development of PCs and consumer electronics goods and will work together on HD DVD technology.
At the press conference, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates revealed that the Xbox 360 video may incorporate in the future the next-generation DVD format developed by Toshiba.
“The initial shipments of Xbox 360 will be based on today's DVD format,” Gates confirmed. “We are looking at whether future versions of Xbox 360 will incorporate an additional capability of an HD DVD player or something else.”
The incorporation of HD DVD technology would put the Xbox 360 on par with the PlayStation 3, at least in what regards to optical storage.
The next-generation videogame and entertainment system from Sony will use Blu-ray Disc technology, a competing next-generation DVD format.
A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold up to 25 gigabytes of data and a double-layer Blu-ray Disc will hold up to 50 gigabytes of data.
Although Blu-ray Disc can technology hold more data per disc than HD DVD, the lower manufacturing costs and compatibility with the current DVD format makes HD DVD more consumer-friendly.
We'll have more on the possible incorporation of HD DVD technology to the Xbox 360 as it develops."

Yet Another Nintendo Revolution Controller
"We keep getting burned on this, but it’s interesting to watch the slow evolution of the phantom “amateur designers” who create these mock-ups. Therefore, please consider this as a form of ‘Tenda fan fiction which is in no direct correlation with the formal design studios in Japan but offers an interesting look at a concurrent design studio based in the basement of a midwestern American home. Besides, if hearsay and “making stuff up” is wrong, then I don’t want to be right."
Is Nintendo "Milking Mario" Nintendo Revolution
Nintendo is not relying too heavily on Mario to sell games and is working hard on new franchises that will appeal to today's gamers, according to Reggie Fils-Aime.
The notoriously enthusiastic VP of sales and marketing for Nintendo of America has discussed the upcoming GameCube line-up for 2005 - which includes four Mario-themed games - but denied that the chubby plumber is Nintendo's only ace in the hole as the Revolution approaches.
Speaking to US mag Electronic Gaming Monthly, Reggie said, "That is something that has been a criticism of the past, you know, 'Folks, are you milking Mario and doing too many Mario-type games?'... We've got Mario in four outstanding games, so it's not an overkill of Mario in terms of putting him in situations that don't make sense."
"Mario Baseball is fantastic," he added, "and the lines have been quite long for Dance Dance Revolution. Mario Strikers is going to be a fantastic game. And of course, Mario Party 7 ... is a game that has a tremendous following."
Reggie then pointed to the games planned for the Revolution as evidence that Nintendo is not putting too much weight on Mario's shoulders. "For Revolution you will see all of our franchises," he said, "plus we've gone on record to say that we are aggressively working on a number of new franchises. We believe that's going to be critical to the launch of Revolution."
He then reiterated Nintendo's desire to create a new Mario-esque character who would appeal to a new breed of gamer. "That is the goal. Now, have I seen it yet? No. Do I know that they're working on it? Yes. But that has certainly been a key driver and a key messaging within NCL is: what is that next generation?"
While Reggie would not enlighten us further on the Revolution's revolution, he did once again emphasise the importance of innovation. "The thing that I always find surprising [about publishers] is when you sit down and share the innovation with them, just how excited they get. I saw it firsthand with DS; we're seeing it now with Revolution.
He then teased about the mysterious Revolution controller and offered another clue as to what its killer feature could be. "The fact that you and your fans haven't seen the controller doesn't mean that no one else has," he said. "We're going to have the ability through wireless internet to download all of your great games from NES, SNES, N64. Think about it: Each of those controllers were different. That captured some of the imagination of what our controller needs to be able to do."
And Reggie finished by reiterating Nintendo's believe that innovation is more important than processing power. "When you get into the meat of that type of innovation with developers their eyes truly light up because they start to imagine what's possible with that type of configuration, which is vastly different than a sheer horsepower type of game."
Come on Nintendo - put us out of our Revolution misery!"
Microsoft, Toshiba To Jointly Develop HD DVD Players
"Asked if the agreement today would impact the move to work out a standard DVD format, Atsutoshi Nishida, president and CEO of Toshiba, said: 'It's hard to answer that.' Nonetheless, he noted that the two sides need to adopt a long-range view toward the establishment of a common standard, adding: 'We must see things from our end-users' point of view.'
Microsoft and Toshiba said they have agreed to jointly develop HD DVD players, giving the Japanese computer and consumer electronics maker a powerful new ally in its battle with Sony and Matsushita Electric Industrial (NYSE: MC) Latest News about Matsushita over technology standards for next-generation audio and visual products.
In a statement issued in Tokyo, the companies said the agreement brings together Microsoft Windows CE technology and Microsoft's expertise in software and PC technologies with Toshiba's expertise in consumer electronics and computing."

Here is some of the information avaiable through their website.
"Game system with tilt sensor and game program including viewpoint direction changing feature
Abstract
A game system displaying a three-dimensional game space on a display includes a housing held by a player, a tilt sensor provided on the housing, a viewpoint coordinates determination mechanism for determining viewpoint coordinates in accordance with an output value of the tilt sensor, and a game image generation processing mechanism for generating a game image based on the viewpoint coordinates determined by the viewpoint coordinates determination mechanism. The game system allows the player to feel as if the three-dimensional game space is tilted in accordance with a tilt of a game device, etc., with a minimal processing burden. "
The patent application was filed for in May 19th 2003, so it looks like the original target for this techonology was the GameCube. I would imagine this would be a canidate for the Revolution.Related Links:United States Patent: 6,908,388Have Nintendo Patented the Revolution controller?

Does the Phantom Live? Interview with Kevin Bachus
Image Source: g4tv.comDoes the Phantom Live?"Infinium's President and COO Kevin Bachus Defends His Phantom Console From Critics Who Doubt its Existence.
Infinium’s
Phantom game console/service has probably inspired more accusations of vaporware than any proposed video game product, ever. Promising to offer a vast library of downloadable PC games, the Phantom aims to create a true game-on-demand network with its streaming technology. Early on after its
announcement in 2003, the Phantom was the subject of a withering investigation by tech site
HardOCP.com, which did not find Infinium’s PR claims to be credible, and doubted whether the device itself even existed. When former Xbox visionary Kevin Bachus was hired as Infinium’s president and chief operating officer a year and a half ago, the company gained a good deal of credibility. However, with one postponed launch date in November 2004 and a no-show on the floor at E3 2005, the Phantom is once again getting a lot of skeptical media attention. Does it really exist? According to Infinium’s Kevin Bachus, yes it does—and he says it’s coming soon. After demonstrating the device on
Attack of the Show, Bachus sat down for an interview to shed some light on the Phantom."
There is a flash video and complete interview available here. Kevin used to be on the original Xbox team. Infinium Labs has secured his talent to help launch the Phantom. The Phantom is not exacly a game console, but more a service box like TiVo. The Phantom will be able to stream all content from servers and does not appear to have an optical drive (just a hard drive). The concept is sound, who wouldn't just want to log in and download the first 15 minutes of content to the latest title to see if they like it. Related Links:
